Sash window work, done properly.

Over 25 years I’ve done just about everything a timber sash window can need. Here’s how I can help, and a promise that I’ll always recommend the repair before the replacement.

Sash Window Repairs

Sticking, rattling, draughty or rotten, put right

Most sash window problems are everyday repairs, not a reason to replace the whole window. A snapped cord that won’t hold the sash open, a sash painted shut, a rattle that lets the wind whistle through, or a patch of soft, rotten timber. I have fixed all of it, thousands of times, over 25 years.

Sash Window Restoration

Bring period windows back to their best

Original sash windows were made from slow-grown timber that is often better than anything you can buy today. With proper care they outlast modern replacements by decades. A full restoration overhauls the whole window, repairs, re-cording, draught-proofing and decoration, so it works and looks the way it did when it was first fitted.

Draught-Proofing

Warmer, quieter, no more rattles

Draught-proofing is the single best-value thing you can do for an old sash window. Upgraded bubble seals are routed neatly into the beads and rails, so the sash still slides freely, but the gaps that let in cold air and rattle in the wind are sealed. Historic England has found it can cut air leakage through a sound sash by up to around 86%.

New & Double-Glazed Sashes

When repair is no longer enough

Sometimes a window is too far gone to save, or you want the comfort of modern glazing. Where that is the case I supply and fit new sashes to match the originals — either single-glazed to keep things traditional, or double-glazed in Accoya, a stable, long-lasting timber, made to match the originals and fitted by me. I will always tell you honestly when a repair would do instead.
